Matthew Howard, also known as Matthew A.B. Howard, was born September 1824 in McIntosh County, Georgia. He died January 2, 1902. He is buried in the Deep Creek Advent Christian Church Cemetery in Columbia County, Florida. His parents were Henry Howard and his wife, Jane Davis. His first marriage in 1844 was to Sarah Crawford, born in 1829, died about 1865, daughter of Reverend (or Elder) Reubin Crawford and his wife, Anna Clark. They had nine children.

- Simon Peter Howard, b. 9/21/1852, d. 6/6/1926, m. Mollie Frances Pringle, daughter of James Jackson Pringle.
- Sara Jane Howard, b. circa 1854, d. 5/4/1919, m. George Washington Rowan, son of John Rowan.
- Evaline Catherine, b. circa 1858, d. before 1880, m. George Washington Lyens, son of Sylvester Lyens.
- Sargent Jehu, b. 2/3/1859, d. 3/31/1935, m. 1) Mary Ellen Crawford, 11/4/1880, daughter of John M. Crawford. m. 2) Laura Henrietta Andrews, widow of Joe Andrews, daughter of Jim McKinney.
- Henry A. Howard, b. 9/16/1860, d. 2/10/1923, m. 1) Cassie ???. m .2) Avie Ann Crawford, 10/21/1882, daughter of John M. Crawford.
- Ruth Howard, b. bet. 1862-1864, d. 10/6/1914, m. 1) ??? Brown. m. 2) Joseph Harry Freeman, son of James Freeman, 4/14/1894.
Matthew Howard's second wife was Rachel Clark, daughter of Charles and Lydia Ann Clark of Charlton County, Georgia. She died about 1911, and is buried at the Advent Christian Church Cemetery in McAlpin, Florida. They had six children.

- Matthew Napolian B. Howard, b. 9/3/1869, d. 4/10/1938, m. Lillie Harper, 12/19/1894, daughter of Thornton Harper.

- Francis Marion Howard, b. 10/27/1874, d. 3/24/1958, m. Mary Ann Eliza Green, 2/1897, daughter of George Washington Green.
- Charles Coleman Howard, b. circa 1877, d. after 1913, m. Agnes Evalene Dinkins.
- Neta Alice, b. 8/29/1882, d. 8/31/1907, m. Martin Armstrong Peterson, 4/29/1900.
